Egyptian Cotton vs Turkish Cotton: Which Is Better?

Egyptian Cotton vs Turkish Cotton: Which Is Better?

Daniel Deyong |

When shopping for quality towels, two names come up time and again: Egyptian cotton and Turkish cotton. Both are considered premium fibres, both command higher price tags than standard cotton, and both promise a luxurious bathing experience. But they are not the same. Understanding the differences will help you choose the right towels for your home — whether you prioritise plush softness, quick drying, or long-term durability.

What Makes Egyptian Cotton Special?

Egyptian cotton (Gossypium barbadense) is grown in the Nile River Valley, where the warm climate and rich, fertile soil produce fibres with an exceptionally long staple length — typically 34–40 mm. These extra-long staple (ELS) fibres are what set Egyptian cotton apart from every other variety.

Because the fibres are so long, they can be spun into very fine, strong yarns with fewer joins. The result is a fabric that feels remarkably smooth against the skin, absorbs moisture extremely well, and actually becomes softer with every wash. Egyptian cotton towels tend to be dense and plush, with a luxurious weight that feels indulgent after a bath or shower.

💡 DID YOU KNOW?

True Egyptian cotton accounts for less than 1% of the world’s total cotton production. Always look for certified Egyptian cotton to ensure you’re getting the genuine article — not a blended imitation.

At Deyongs, our Egyptian Embrace collection is crafted from 100% genuine Egyptian cotton at 600 GSM, delivering that hotel-quality feel you can enjoy every day at home.

What Makes Turkish Cotton Different?

Turkish cotton is also a long-staple fibre, typically grown in the Aegean region of Turkey. While not quite as long as Egyptian cotton fibres, Turkish cotton staples are still considerably longer than standard upland cotton, usually measuring 30–36 mm.

The key difference lies in how Turkish cotton towels perform. They tend to be lighter and more airy than their Egyptian counterparts. Turkish cotton loops create excellent absorbency while drying significantly faster, making them an ideal choice for warmer climates, busy households, or anyone who dislikes a damp towel lingering on the rail.

Turkish cotton towels also start out with a slightly textured feel that softens beautifully over time. If you prefer a towel that is absorbent yet lightweight and quick to dry, Turkish cotton is an excellent option.

Which Should You Choose?

The honest answer is that neither is objectively “better” — it depends entirely on what you value most in a towel. Here is a simple way to think about it:

Choose Egyptian cotton if: you love a thick, plush towel that wraps you in softness. You don’t mind a slightly longer drying time and you want something that feels like a five-star hotel every single day. Egyptian cotton is the ultimate choice for bath sheets and hand towels in a master bathroom where comfort is king.

Choose Turkish cotton if: you need towels that dry quickly between uses, especially in a family bathroom or guest room. Turkish cotton is also a superb choice if you prefer a lighter towel that still delivers impressive absorbency without the bulk.

💡 BUYER’S TIP

Many households benefit from having both. Use Egyptian cotton towels in your main bathroom for daily indulgence, and Turkish cotton towels in the guest room or by the pool where quick drying matters most.

What About GSM?

Regardless of whether you choose Egyptian or Turkish cotton, GSM (grams per square metre) is the other critical factor. GSM measures the density and weight of the towel fabric. For premium bath towels, look for a GSM between 500 and 700:

500–600 GSM gives you a medium-weight towel that balances softness, absorbency, and drying time perfectly. This is the sweet spot for most UK homes.

600–700 GSM delivers a thick, hotel-quality feel that is supremely plush. These towels take a little longer to dry but feel incredible. Our Egyptian Embrace range sits at 600 GSM — right in the luxury zone.

Anything above 700 GSM can feel overly heavy and may struggle to dry properly in a typical UK bathroom. Anything below 400 GSM will feel thin and scratchy by comparison.

How to Care for Premium Cotton Towels

Whichever cotton you choose, proper care will keep your towels soft and absorbent for years. Follow these simple rules:

Wash before first use to remove any manufacturing residues and open up the cotton fibres for maximum absorbency.

Use a moderate temperature — 40°C is ideal for most coloured towels. White towels can handle 60°C occasionally for a deeper clean.

Avoid fabric softener. It coats the fibres and reduces absorbency over time. Use white vinegar in the rinse cycle instead for naturally soft results.

Tumble dry on a low heat to restore fluffiness, or line dry and give them a good shake before hanging.

Don’t overload the machine. Towels need room to move and rinse thoroughly.

💡 PRO TIP

Replace your towels every two to three years for the best hygiene and performance. If your towels no longer absorb water quickly or feel rough despite washing, it’s time for a refresh. Browse our full towel collection for your next upgrade.
