Towels are one of those household essentials we use every single day, yet most of us rarely think about replacing them. Over time, even the best quality towels start to wear down — losing their softness, absorbency, and that fresh feeling you love. But how do you know when it’s time to say goodbye to your old towels and invest in new ones?
Here are five telltale signs that your towels have seen better days — and what to look for when you upgrade.
1. They’re No Longer Absorbent
This is the most common complaint — and usually the first sign. If you find yourself rubbing a towel across your skin repeatedly and still feeling damp, the cotton fibres have likely broken down. Over time, washing and tumble drying cause the loops in terry cloth to flatten, which drastically reduces a towel’s ability to soak up moisture.
Fabric softener is often the hidden culprit here. It coats cotton fibres with a waxy residue that builds up wash after wash, creating a waterproof-like barrier. If your towels feel silky smooth but don’t dry you off, fabric softener is almost certainly to blame. Try washing them with a cup of white vinegar instead — if absorbency doesn’t return, it’s time for new towels.
Tip: When shopping for replacements, look for towels weighing at least 500gsm (grams per square metre). Higher GSM means denser, more absorbent towels. Our Egyptian cotton and Pima cotton towels range from 550gsm to 800gsm for maximum absorbency.
2. They Smell Musty — Even After Washing
There’s nothing worse than stepping out of a hot shower and wrapping yourself in a towel that smells like a damp cellar. A persistent musty smell, even right out of the washing machine, is a clear sign that bacteria and mildew have taken up permanent residence in the fibres.
This happens most often in towels that don’t dry out fully between uses — especially in poorly ventilated bathrooms. While a hot wash at 60°C with a small amount of bicarbonate of soda can sometimes rescue a smelly towel, once the odour keeps returning no matter what you try, the towel is beyond saving.
Prevention is always better than cure. Hang towels fully spread out on a rail or hook (never bunched on the back of a door), ensure good bathroom ventilation, and wash towels every three to four uses at most.
3. They Feel Rough or Scratchy
Remember the feeling of your towels when they were brand new? Soft, plush, and almost cloud-like against your skin. If that feeling has been replaced by something closer to sandpaper, it’s a strong signal the cotton fibres have deteriorated.
Hard water areas are particularly tough on towels. Mineral deposits from calcium and magnesium build up in the fabric over hundreds of washes, making towels stiff and crunchy. You can temporarily improve the feel by adding white vinegar to the rinse cycle or using a water softening tablet, but eventually the damage is irreversible.
The quality of the original cotton matters enormously here. Towels made from long-staple fibres like Egyptian or Pima cotton naturally resist roughness for much longer than those made from shorter, cheaper fibres. It’s a genuine case where spending a bit more upfront saves you money in the long run.

4. You Can See Visible Wear and Tear
This one might seem obvious, but many of us hold onto towels well past the point of no return. Take a proper look at your towels today. Are there frayed edges? Pulled loops? Thinning patches in the middle where you grip the towel most? Faded colours that have turned patchy rather than gracefully lighter?
Visible wear isn’t just an aesthetic issue. Thin, threadbare patches mean the towel is less effective at its one job — drying you. And frayed edges only get worse with every wash, shedding lint across your other laundry and clogging your machine’s filter.
As a general rule, well-made towels should last between two and five years depending on how frequently they’re used. Guest towels that only come out occasionally can last considerably longer, while daily-use bath towels will naturally need replacing sooner.
5. They’ve Lost Their Colour
Colour fading is natural over time, especially with regular washing and sun exposure. But when your once-vibrant teal towels have turned a washed-out grey-green, or your crisp white towels have yellowed and look dingy despite bleaching, it affects how your entire bathroom looks and feels.
Your bathroom is a space you use every day. It should feel clean, inviting, and put-together. Fresh, well-matched towels are one of the simplest and most affordable ways to transform a tired bathroom — think of it as an easy refresh rather than a grudge purchase.
If you’re replacing towels anyway, consider choosing colours that complement your bathroom tiles and decor. Our towel collections come in a wide range of colours and designs, from classic whites and neutrals to bold stripes and contemporary patterns.
What to Do with Your Old Towels
Before you bin your old towels, consider giving them a second life. Old towels make excellent cleaning rags for around the house and car. Many animal shelters and rescue centres gratefully accept donated towels for bedding. Some textile recycling schemes will also take worn towels and repurpose the fibres.
How to Choose Towels That Last
When you’re ready to invest in new towels, keep these three things in mind. First, cotton quality: look for Egyptian cotton, Pima cotton, or Turkish cotton for the best combination of softness, absorbency, and durability. Second, weight: a GSM of 500 or above will give you that luxury hotel feel. Third, construction: check for double-stitched hems and dense, even loops across the towel surface.
At Deyongs, we’ve been perfecting towels for nearly 180 years. Every towel in our collection is crafted with care, using premium fibres and expert construction techniques to ensure they stay soft, absorbent, and beautiful for years to come.
